Supporting scholars
-
2025 will be the 19th year of our scholarship program in collaboration with the Maya Educational Foundation.
-
The scholarship program responded to the fact that in 2005 there were only 3 university graduates in the town of Cajolá. The members of the group were certain that education was fundamental to developing the town.
-
The ideal candidates are young men and women who wanted to invest in their education and were committed to work to develop their community and were committed to their Maya Mam culture.
-
The goals of the program are to assist the youth of Cajolá to prepare for a professional career that allows them to work for the development of the community.
-
Students are required to attend monthly meetings where they can be guided on their scholastic work, where they can learn about career opportunities, the history of Guatemala, or current events. Students are also required to give 2 hours per month of volunteer service in one of our projects, hopefully related to the field they are studying.
-
Scholarships are available to all of the members of Grupo Cajolá and many of the teachers are studying for bachelor’s degrees to improve their preparation. Occasionally one of the scholarship students is able to accept an open position in our education program.
-
To date we have graduated doctors, lawyers, teachers, linguists, nurses…24 professionals!
-
In addition to the support we receive from the Maya Educational Foundation, we are pleased to receive annual funding for the Joe Sarti Scholarship, organized by his family to recognize his commitment to Guatemala and education. Each year the $2000 scholarship is shared among 4 part time university students pursuing pedagogy
