Reforestation

The Mam worldview is based on harmony with nature. Cajolá’s forests have been stripped of many trees for firewood needed to fuel kitchen stoves. Forests are critical to the health of springs, and many of Cajolá’s once plentiful springs are drying up. Grupo Cajola’s contribution is planting saplings each spring. We gather volunteers and students to hike up the mountains to plant saplings. In spring of 2024 we planted 3500 saplings – pine, alder, and oak trees.

From time to time we hike up into the woods to see how the saplings are faring. It is so rewarding to see the 6 - 8 foot trees that were once saplings!
